Rev Father Peter Ssenkaayi, Assistant Diocesan Director of Masaka Diocese Development Organisation, (Caritas MADDO) has urged farmers to opt for high yielding crop varieties to overcome food insecurity and to increase household incomes.
He gave the advice in his speech at Njeru Village, Nabigasa Sub-County, Kyotera District where he was chief guest during a Farmers’ Field Day last week.
“The Catholic Church wants all its followers to work hard and have an income of at least five dollars a day,” he said.
The farmers were mainly members of the Enabling Rural Innovation (ERI) Project which is run and supervised by Caritas MADDO.
The farmers displayed various products from their farms which included dried vegetables, wine, and fruits.
MADDO assists the farmers under ERI to produce three food crops including maize, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, and cassava.
Most of the farmers have been trained in pig rearing, sweet potato multiplication, grafting techniques, coffee management and marketing, management of cooperatives, animal management and different irrigation systems.
The organisation has asked more farmers to register for 2019 project.
